Steve Dower

South West Blood Bikes

Steve had a successful 40-year career which started as an apprentice, progressed through various management positions and concluded in senior leadership roles for Babcock. His work took him around the country, working alongside niche engineering and management consultancies, through to multinationals such as Rolls Royce, Lockheed Martin and BAE Systems.

Having lost his wife Dawn in 2014, Steve sought to re-evaluate what was important in life and returned to Plymouth based roles. In September 2022 he was able to retire, aged 56, but wanted to use his broad knowledge and experience to give something back to the NHS and St Luke’s hospice, who had supported Dawn and the family during her brave fight against cancer, Steve therefore combined his lifelong passion for motorcycles with this aim and joined South West Blood Bikes (SWBB) as a volunteer rider.

In May 2025 Steve was voted onto the SWBB Charity Board of Trustees and took up his current role as Chairman. Since then, he has led the development of the Charity’s five-year strategy, risk and other key management systems, established formal delegations and the update of policies to better align the Charity to the opportunities and challenges it faces, as the demand for its sometimes lifesaving services continues to increase significantly.
